Feel Good But Forgettable

APK | July 20, 2006

Rating: ***1/2 (***** Very Good, **** Good, *** Fair, ** Average, * Bad)

A couple of good songs make Bommarillu, Devi Sri Prasad's latest offering, worth listening to. Siddhartha renders his voice for one song. Sid-Gen's last movie together, Boys (their debut, too) was a huge musical success. This album doesn't feel very fresh; there is absolutely no experimenting-DSP played safe this time. You've heard these songs a million times before, but if you still like them, here they are for you.

We Have A Romeo This is a song tailor made for Siddhartha. Remember 'Girl Friend' from Boys? Well, this is 'Girl Friend' Part II. If you liked 'Girl Friend' then you will surely enjoy this number, even though it's not as fresh as its predecessor. Andrea's voice is cool, the English lyrics have become really, really repetitive now. ***

Bommani Geesthe This song sounds like one in Dalapathi. It is a sweet little number and transports you straight into some village where you imagine two adolescents proclaiming their love to each other. Melodious or boring, depends on one's taste. ***

Kaani Ippudu Only Devi Sri could have rendered this song, especially when he goes 'Kaani Ippudu...Ummmmm!' It talks about falling in love for the first time. The lyrics, the beat and the vocals-all together make this a fun song to listen to. ***1/2

Laloo Darvaja The guitar strumming in the whole song is beautiful, and the song is nice and earthy. 'Love makes life beautiful', which is also the tagline of the movie is part of the chorus. A pacy and energetic number. ****

Nammaka Thappani This is a beautiful song about estranged love. It is a highly romantic number with a good rhythm which makes the song both energetic and melancholy at the same time. ****

Appudo Ippudo Sid the Singer is back. Siddhartha renders this song after Chukkalo Chandrudu's 'Everybody' and 'Edalo Eppudo'. This is a peppy and youthful number. ***

And the verdict is.. Not one of Devi Sri's best, but definitely above average music-the kind which gets the listener curious about the movie. So the purpose of having music in the first place is achieved. It's not an unforgettable compilation, but Nammaka Tappani, Kaani Ippudu and Laloo Darvaja are worth listening to over and over again.. at least for a while. Rest depends on the movie, if it works, then the music will automatically pick up.
