Youthful And Melodious

APK | September 02, 2007

Rating: ***.75 (***** Very Good, **** Good, *** Fair, ** Average, * Bad)

Anand started a trend and Godavari's music was much appreciated too. Sekhar Kammula's latest venture, Happy Days, has Mickey J. Meyer of 10th Class fame, instead of KM Radhakrishnan who delivered the music for his first two flicks. Happy Days stars a host of newcomers and the music has a fresh outlook to it too. It's probable that this may not be everyone's cup of tea. But the music is definitely lovely and will be a highlight for the movie. Mass has no place in Happy Days.

Arey Arey Karthik renders this melodious love song beautifully. The tune is quite catchy and the guitar used in the interlude is wonderfully easy on the ear. Vanamali's lyrics are sweet and the chorus stands out in the song. A good opening to a promising album. ****

TamannaJill Jill Jinga New-sounding voices including Krishna Chaitanya, Kranthi, Aditya Sidharth and Shashi Kiran; conversational lyric by Venkatesh Patvari. 'Jill Jill Jinga' has a chorus that sounds similar to 'We will rock you' by Queen. This song describes all that goes in a regular college going person's life. This is the kind of song that pushes the screenplay forward, and has been done well. It will be fun to watch the number on screen. ***.5

Happy Days Rock Naresh Iyer's fabulous voice is accompanied by Mickey J. Meyer. Meyer displays yet again of how well he can use the guitar and this makes this song worth listening to. Veturi's lyric is straightforward, as the music catches more attention here. This is a catchy number and although the chorus goes 'Happy Days', it is more fusion than western. ***.75

Ya Kundendu A prayer by Pranavi.

O My Friend Not in the same league as 'Mustafa Mustafa' (Premadesam), but a nice friendship song all the same. Karthik's vocals are suited for this soft and sweet number. Vanamali chips in the sentimental lyrics. It's good to hear a friendship song that describes the relationship without being overtly mushy. Again, 'O My Friend' is the only English lyric in a proper Telugu song. ****

SandeshYe Cheekati We've heard this sort before, right from the hugely successful 'Meghalalo' from Gulabi. But a peppy duet in the album is welcome anytime, after several soft melodies. Ranjith and Sunita Sarathy's voices team up with Vanamali's lyrics. This doesn't exactly rock as it's supposed to, but it's not bad either. Just that we've been there, heard this. ***

Happy Days The same as 'Happy Days Rock', except it is a little mellower. Harshika and Mickey J. Meyer render this title number. It has a reflective and nostalgic feel to it. ***.5

Last Word Once you hear this album, it becomes immediately clear why Kammula preferred Meyer to his old favorite KM Radhakrishnan. Happy Days has an English title and a youthful, casual and western appeal to it. A few international classic numbers of rock and country's influence is seen prominently. Happy Days thankfully has no item number, and is youth-centric. Meyer uses it well, without making it way too obvious and his instrumental is strong. His kind of music is what one can call the Ilayaraja-Rehman-Harris Jayaraj route (Rehman worked under Illayaraja and Jayaraj under Rehman). This can only be a compliment. Overall, it's a good album and Kammula-Meyer combination doesn't disappoint.
