If Kamal was 'Lokanayakudu', Thalaiva is now 'Kathanayakadu'. The music has been composed by GV Prakash Kumar. It's not a fab album, but it is decent. It has good vocals, some nice instrumental here and there and quirky lyrics along with an active chorus. Jagapati Babu, Nayanatara and Meena also star in this bilingual.

Cinema Cinema This is a movie about the wonders of cinema. Shankar Mahadevan sings it supported by a chorus spouting all the major names in South cinema. An elevated symphony is chosen by composer GV Prakash Kumar. It makes for a good opening song for the album. This Cinema Mahima and Superstar number with the choir chorus has a sort of broken rhythm about it-lost in translation? Still, nice enough. ***

Challe Challe Hariharan begins the number with his soft melodious voice, while Sujatha picks up from there. Two child singers, Ranjini and Pooja form the chorus. This is essentially a duet. Hariharan's playback is flawless, and this number is mellow and calm in entirety. ***.25

RajnikantOm Zaarare Influenced by an international musical piece or two (especially the beginning), Daler Mehndi's powerful vocals could have been used better in this song. Chitra and Sadhana Sargam accompany Mehndi in this extra-long song (7 minutes+). Somehow it fails to charm, even though it has all the potential to be the pick of the album-something's missing. **.75

Vatche Vatche Shreya Ghoshal renders another inspired piece, and she does so beautifully. Again kids accompany her in the chorus. Rain songs never seem to fade away and the song's tingling rain effect stays on, making it perhaps the most hummable number of the lot. ***

Ra Ra Ra Ramayanna Kailash Kher sings this song, another number about 'Superstar'. Like 'Lokanayakuda' in Dasavatharam, this song talks about Rajnikant in the eyes of his fans. Maybe this is also the character he plays in the movie, but all the lyrics is just meant for Rajni fans to wolf whistle. ***

Last Word It is very evident that it is a Tamil composition originally. That cultural aura does not leave the music. Lot of the numbers seem to be directed at the actor as opposed to the character-but are they one and the same here? Playback is good, the songs are meant for Rajnikant fans and overall the album is not bad. Not bad, but nothing more.
