Rating: ***.5 (***** Very Good, **** Good, *** Fair, ** Average, * Bad)
Balakrishna's latest offering Maharadhi's music is out, and one wonders where the loyal and efficient Mani Sharma is, replaced by Guru Kiran. Guru Kiran who? Well, for the uninformed, this Kannada musician composed Upendra's last flick, Jai Ganesh, and also Apthamitra (the original Chandramukhi) and super-hit Jogi (now being remade as Yogi with Prabhas). And the director-P. Vasu of the super successful Chandramukhi. So much for the information-and is it any good? Read on to know.
Balakrishna One can almost visualize colored papers being thrown into the light of the big screen as this song starts. A treat for NBK fans, the song is titled on his own name-'Balakrishna' and starts off with his name chanted many times over by an enthusiastic chorus and reminds one of the 90s kind of music-the beats, the rhythm, the tempo, the chorus and lyrics are all reminiscent of a colorful past. ***.5
Kamala Kucha Chuchuka You are not going to belive this one-this starts with the prayer 'Kamala Kucha Chuchuka kumkuma toh' rendered with disco beats. As long as religious and moral police ignore this, this song is fun and total dance material and sounds better each time you listen to it. ***.5
Mangamma Mangamma Okay, this song is interesting. This starts off with the weird phrases and rhythmic lyrics ('Avuthundi Kuchi Kuchi', anyone?). Remember the suggestive 'Jujubilallo' in Veerabhadra? Well, this is part 2. Another dance number. ***.25
Uppu Chepa Pappu Item, or what? Rustic, peppy, foot-tapping-all at once. With the talented duo Shankar Mahadevan and Bombay Jayashree behind the mike, it couldn't have been any more fun. Now it's all left to the picturization. This one's a winner. ***.5
Maja Maja We feel like traveling on a train, with the tracks sound resonating throughout the song, a favorite with composers everywhere. Maja Maja is not the best song in the album, but it is a typical Balayya song, where there is ample scope for dance, and a little Shakira-style boogieing, if you get my drift. ***
Veeche Galulalo The lyrics of this composition are good-not outstanding, but good, and this is a hummable and soft number. Vijay Yesudas renders this number, and his voice suits the song perfectly. ***.25
And the verdict is.. The album has some good songs, and is worth listening to-like most of Balakrishna's movies, the movie and it's BO verdict notwithstanding, the music is mostly always reasonably good. Guru Kiran doesn't disappoint, and the album has variety and some of the songs actually grow on you. The music will surely credit the movie but the rest depends, as always, on the movie.
