SV Krishna Reddy's Similar Sounds

APK | May 08, 2006

Rating: *** (***** Very Good, **** Good, *** Fair, ** Average, * Bad)

SV Krishna Reddy sure is a talented man-how many people can boast of giving out hit movies and hit music among other things? One must say he's a complete film maker. His earlier movies and music had a certain fresh appeal about them, even if they were not very original music numbers and inspired from a song here and a tune there. This album is no different, but SVK tries nothing new here-it sounds like his earlier music. The problem is what was fresh and hummable a decade ago isn't so now. But they are songs which can be heard although there is nothing exceptional about this album, in that it doesn't seem to grow on you after the first hearing.

Ringingakka It is now established that SV Krishna Reddy likes Crazy Frog tunes. The music director in him found inspiration in it, because Ringingakka resembles this tune. 'Ringingakka' is the name of the song?! Weird, isn't it? So are the Crazy Frog tunes, and they are peppy dance numbers, so the song finds itself imitating the song in this too. No points for originality here, but it's a fun song. ***

Abbai This is a wedding song, ever-present in most of SVK's movies (Remember 'Maavi Chiguru' and its famous wedding song – 'Kodanda Ramudanta'?). The chorus goes 'Boom Boom Shakalaka' which is heard so often but not in a wedding song's chorus, and like the first number this song is fun and fast paced too. The ceremony is also performed in the middle of the song with 'Mangalyam...' mantra as an interlude. ***1/2

If You Want This is a romantic number, with the man and woman both going 'Naughty, Sweetie, Hottie, Beauty..'. Frankly, it sounds silly, reminding us of the kind of songs we heard in the early 90s. But apart from that, overall the song is a nice duet, with good vocals from Sagar and Ganga (Good duet names, aren't they?). ***

Hot Summer After Yuvan Shankar Raja and MM Keeravani (Remember the songs 'Thathai Thathai' and 'Hylessa' from 'Manmadha' and 'Sri Ramadasu' respectively?), it is the turn of SVK to use the voice of fellow-composer Devi Sri Prasad's unique and energetic voice. The beats are ethnic with the use of Indian instruments and rhythm, but it starts off with 'On a hot summer morning, a girl went walking..'. It is a delightful song, and one can suspect Devi Sri's own ingenious improvisation here, and the way he modulates his voice is funny and enjoyable. Matangi makes good company with this happy song. ****

Teeyaga This is a beautiful romantic song sung by the combo of new finds Koundinya and Sankeerthi which will be liked by all. This is a more sober and melodious version of the duets in 'Vinodam'. ***1/2

And the verdict is.. This is aimed at being a nice, fun and enjoyable album, and that's what it is. Nothing more or less-this will stay till the movie releases, and depending on the fate of the movie, the music will remain or fade away-as is the case with many albums now-a-days. 'Hot Summer' and 'Teeyaga' are likable numbers, and 'Abbai,' the wedding song is sure to be heard for a while in weddings. Otherwise, the songs remain with you only as long as you are listening to them and are pretty forgettable.
