Rating: *** (***** Very Good, **** Good, *** Fair, ** Average, * Bad)
Hello, Prabhas, long time no see. Hello, Ramana Gogula, we meet again. After Annavaram, Gogula has another release geared up-Yogi, the remake of the Kannada flick Jogi. Co-starring Nayanatara, Yogi is all set to make a January 10 release. Meanwhile, the music is not bad, but there is no freshness in the recently released albums. All sound the same, all sound like re-hashes of the composer's old movies, and are slightly stale. For the credit of Gogula, his music is always worth a hear, but both Annavaram and Yogi deserve little else than one hearing.
Dolu Baja The opening song in Annavaram (with music by Gogula) has Shankar Mahadevan behind the mike. Ditto Yogi. The very same Gogula, the very same Mahadevan. This is a song on Lord Shiva-but its not really the devotional type. It is more casual, appreciating the qualities of the Hindu God in detail. It's a happy, pacy number that sets one's feet tapping. ***.5
Orori Yogi Bangalore Sunitha's starts off this number in her Bangalore accent, and two lines down we understand that it is a song of seduction. Karthik gives Sunitha company, and their voices suit the song well. The lyrics are designed to make you wonder if it isn't a bit too in-the-face seduction. Subtlety doesn't find a place in this song, and it's a blatantly sensuous number (bordering on crass, if not for the voices). ***
Ye Nomu Nochindo A sad, sweet song bathed in Telugu cinema's favorite 'Mother Sentiment' (Next comes sister sentiment). It is about...mother, son, God...get the picture? ***
Gilli Gichi Ganga and Rajesh render this naughty and playful number. The whole song is full of young mischief-the lyrics, the rhythm, the voices and the music accompanying it. The mandatory English lyrics are ever-present. How can there be an album without English lyrics? Rajesh's voice suits the lead actor-Prabhas. ***
Gana Gana Gana This song has the talented Adnan Sami with Sudha lending their voices to this duet. The music is reminiscent of an Arabic tinge. This is another sensual number, but while 'Orori Yogi' is darker, this one sounds more like there might be some dance in it. Sami is wasted in this song though. **.75
Nee Illu Bangaram The versatile Tippu and Sunitha sing this song of joy, happiness and blessings-'Nee illu bangaram kanu'. **.75
Theme Music Mediocre; Come on Mister G, is this all? **.5
Last Word Yogi doesn't exactly rock, but it does have some decent numbers. It is not entirely disappointing, but no great shakes.
