Vijaya Vari Gundamma Katha, which starred the then top-of-the-form actors NTR, ANR, SVR, Savithri and Jamuna, was released on June 7th, 1962. Jointly produced by Chakrapani-Nagi Reddy and directed by Kamalakara Kameswara Rao, the film took more than a year in the making.
But once the film released there was no stopping it. The film smashed all previous records at the box office. It completed 100 days in as many as 17 centres, including 2 late release centres, in the State and silver jubilee in Vijayawada (Sri Durga Kala Mandir).
It was the first film to run for 100 days (with daily three shows) in Hyderabad.
Interestingly, the Tamil remake of the film 'Manithan Maravillai' directed by Chakrapani released earlier [March 8th, 1962] than its original Telugu version. It had Gemini Ganesan playing the role played by NTR in the original.
Gundamma Katha had dialogues by DV Narasa Raju, lyrics by Pingali and cinematography by Marcus Bartley.
