1966's Biggest Hit Letha Manasulu
March 28, 2007
AVM Productions' Letha Manasulu, released in 1966, was the biggest hit of not only that year but also of actor Haranath. Kutti Padmini, who now makes big budget serials in Tamil, played the role of twin sisters Puppy and Lalli in the film, while the then popular actress Jamuna played the female lead. Also in the cast were G. Vara Lakshmi, Relangi, Padmanabham, Geetanjali and Kanakam.
Directed by Krishnan Panju and produced by AV Meiyappan, it had dialogues by DV Narasaraju, music by MS Viswanathan and lyrics by Dasarathi-Arudra. Anil Prabhas Enterprises was the sole distributor of the film.
A film by the same name was made again in 2004 but it failed to repeat the box-office success of the first film. Starring Srikanth, Kalyani and Gopika, it was jointly produced by V. Bala Souri-M. Ananta Varma, presented by Kosaraju Rajendra Babu and directed by SV Krishna Reddy.
Getting back to the original film, it celebrated a 100-day run in 18 theatres (first release-17, late release-1), which is still a record for kids' films.
