NTR's golden classic Narthanasala [co-starring Savithri] was directed by Kamalakara Kameswara Rao and jointly produced by Sridhara Rao & Lakshmirajyam under the banner of Rajyam Pictures, the same banner which earlier produced Daasi (1952), Harischandra (1956) and Krishna Leelalu (1959).
It was the first Telugu film which made good use of the Kuchipudi dance form [Brihannala teaches this dance form to Uttara]. Choreographer Vempati Satyam's hard work was evident in each frame and was appreciated by all. 'Indian Tarzan' Dandamudi Rajagopala Rao played the role of Bheema, while SV Rangarao and Relangi Venkatramaiah played the roles of Keechaka and Uttarakumara to perfection.
Narthanasala was the only Indian film selected for screening at Afro-Asian Film Festival in Jakarta. It also won the President's Award (for the 'Second Best Film'), Film Fans Assocation Award (for the best film in Telugu) and Filmfare Best Telugu Movie Award that year.
Art by TVS Sharma, cinematography by MA Rehman, dialogues by Samudrala, editing by SPS Veerappa, lyrics by Samudrala-SriSri-Kosaraju and music by S. Dakshina Murthy are the other credits.
Released on October 11th, 1963, the film had a 100-day run in as many as 14 centres [late release-3]. The details are as follows:
