Home > New Blood In Tollywood New Blood In Tollywood Among the 20-odd directors who made their debut this year, only a handful of them have emerged successful with their maiden ventures. Prabhudeva, Surender Reddy, Boyapati Seenu, Deva Katta and Indraganti Mohana Krishna were the ones who could make an impact. Rajesh Touchriver, Kuchipudi Venkat, Ramesh Varma, KB Anand and Ranganath showed a lot of promise but could not deliver. Three noted Tamil directors - Sabhapati, Kanmani and Radhamohan - made their debut in Telugu films. The year 2005 also saw a handful of technicians turning to direction, prominent among them being choreographer-actor Prabhudeva and story writer Posani Krishna Murali. Posani could not succeed in his attempt despite roping in big names in the industry - Krishna, Nandamuri Harikrishna and Vijayanirmala. Indraganti Mohana Krishna's 'Grahanam', which won the Indira Gandhi award for the best first film of a director for the year 2004, was finally released on 26th August, 2005. The critically acclaimed film could not set the box-office ringing but it brought Indraganti fame. He is now working on another Telugu classic Butchi Babu's 'Chivaraku Migiledi'. Choreographer-turned-actor-turned-director Prabhudeva's directorial debut 'Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana' not only set the box office on fire, but also won him rave reviews. He is now directing 'Pournami', starring Prabhas, Trisha and Charmme. After being in the industry for a couple of years, Nandamuri Kalyanram has finally tasted success with 'Athanokkade' being declared a hit, thanks to debutant director Surender Reddy. Raviteja scored another hit with Boyapti Seenu's 'Bhadra', while young producer 'Dil' Raju completed his hat-trick of successes. Though the movie was panned by critics, it was a hit with the audiences. 'Vennela' opened to mixed reactions from the youth. The film is directed by Deva Katta, an NRI based in Detroit. How this movie fares at the box office remains to be seen.
