Naresh and VidishaThis is a trademark EVV Satyanarayana flick. It's a very conventional, regular story about a miserly money lender, played by Naresh. After Kitakitalu, this may be another grosser at the BO. The men are miserable morons, the women are their slaves or sleazy babes, and the value system is totally demented. There is the regular EVV comedy, one-liners, useless but funny flat characters and a solid story that has a beginning, middle and an end.

Plot Athili Sattibabu's father was such a great man that he has his statue erected in the city. But Sattibabu is a money lender whose only interest in life is money. He doesn't care for love, kindness or his family, consisting of his elder brothers, one a drunkard (Raju Babu) and the other a gambler (Sunil). He owns a wedding team, with everything from cooks to tents. The cook's daughter is in love with him, but he wants to marry only for dowry. He likes Pranathi, who owns a parlour opposite his shop, but her father asks Sattibabu for dowry. In the meantime, he gets more and more nasty to people and the town boycotts him. Whether he turns over a new leaf and how this happens is the rest of the story.

Story, Screenplay and Direction The story is very old-as old as Black and White movies. The casualness with which dowry is mentioned, the whole sub-plot with Sattibabu's brother-in-law is simply not to the sensibilities of today's audiences. But since it is a relevant and existing situation for many areas, it might appeal to viewers there. But what strikes you is that there is absolutely nothing fresh, not one new aspect in the movie. From Naresh (the old one) to Rajendra Prasad, they've all done their fair share of movies playing the miser/money lender who turns over a new leaf.

The story moves on forward, with the pace of a comic serial. All the male characters, although terrible losers all, are particularly well-defined. The women are portrayed and treated like filth, but it doesn't matter to an immune viewership now. What matters is that there is not as much comedy and as many one-liners as they would have preferred or expected in an EVV movie.

The municipal corporator's track who constantly threatens the people with outer-ring roads and property accessions is funny, as are one-liners from all the regular comedians.

Naresh and KoushaPerformances Naresh plays Sattibabu with utmost conviction. Sunil and Raghu Babu portray the roles of a gambler and a drunk with much gusto. Krishna Bhagawan as a corrupt and misleading municipal authority is funny. The entire gamut of actors ranging from Brahmanadam to Ali and Venu Madhav do their job well. The two female leads are raw and their roles are almost insignificant.

Music and Dance With much of the music lifted from English numbers, the picturization has the regular 30 dancers gyrating and exercising in colorful costumes with the lead pair in the centre. Yawn!

Last Word This movie should have come out two decades ago-but it might still work for many of us who are stuck in a time-wrap. The good thing is it never drags, and one can laugh a while. For that, forget sense and sensibilities if you have to like Athili Sattibabu LKG.
