Akshay Kumar and Shiney AhujaBhool Bhulaiyaa is a remake of the Malayalam hit Manichitra Thazhu, which was remade again in Kannada and then Tamil/Telugu blockbuster Chandramukhi. Remember when Priyadarshan remade Thevar Magan/Kshatriya Putrudu in Hindi as Virasat? That was really something-keeping the best parts of the original intact, changing a few things to suit the Hindi tongue and audiences and the casting was superb. Bhool Bhulaiyaa, unfortunately, lacks those very things. The best parts have been removed, the changes are the inclusion of Priyan's usual slapstick and the casting is flawed. Akshay Kumar enters some minutes before intermission and the climax is not shot as effectively as the gripping original.

Plot Siddharth Chaturvedi is back at his ancestral house with his newly-wed wife Avni. They want to stay at the royal mansion but the extended family opposes this-legend has it that it is haunted by the ghost of a dancer who has destroyed the family for generations. But they end up staying there, and mysterious happenings start to haunt the terrified family. Siddharth's friend and a renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Aditya Shrivastav, enters the mansion to solve the trouble.

Story and Direction, Screenplay The original script has had a lot of work put into it and the screenplay is just too good. The idea in the direction of say, Chandramukhi, is not to scare, but to thrill. Priyan loses that idea somewhere in the first 20 minutes and neither scares, thrills nor amuses. For those who've watched the original, this is a disappointment. As mentioned before, Akshay's late entry and the climax, which could have been a whole lot better, are the minuses.

Akshay-Priyan is a good combo and he performs flawlessly, especially the comic parts. The exclusion of the chartbuster 'Hare Krishna Hare Ram' is disappointing. There is some confusion (in the director's and art director's mind) about the location: Rajasthan or the ghats of Ganga. Costumes, cars and tradition are that of Rajasthan and the banks of the Ganges are shown repeatedly, for some reason. 'Monjulika' is a Bengali who wears an Odissi costume and dances in the South Indian classical style.

For Hindi cinema, the plot might be relatively new. Akshay's entry is fun. Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi and Vidya Balan are good. Rajpal Yadav is as usual funny. Clarity in execution is missing at some points and the movie lacks the desired energy.

Amisha PatelPerformances Akshay Kumar is really good; but his late entry does nothing for the movie. Vidya Balan is reserved in the first half, and in the climax, she is good. She could have been more energetic, but somehow she refrains from giving it her all. She has immense potential and she is one of the strong points of the movie. No comparisons can be made to Shobana, Soundarya and Jyotika. Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi, Rajpal Yadav are good. Amisha Patel doesn't have much to do.

Music and Dance The best song has not been used. 'Zindagi Ka Safar' is good. Background score is adequate.

Last Word If you've not seen any of the south versions and don't know the story, then this might be somewhat an interesting watch.
