Evadaite Naakenti is definitely a comeback vehicle for Rajasekhar. The title describes the theme, the same as that of many recent movies right from Tagore and Oke Okkadu to the latest Samanyudu. If you scan Rajasekhar's last five releases, this is actually a movie precise in terms of the script, and it will not go undigested. That being said, it is a movie full of flaws, mainly the fact that it is too loud. An army man getting into politics and fighting corruption, in short, is Evadaithe Naakenti.
Plot Army man Surya (Rajasekhar) comes home on a holiday. He notices the corrupt political system, as his father and brothers-in-law are all politicians. The blatant corruption disturbs him, and he decides to stand for the elections as an independent candidate after a series of events. Once elected, he gets to be the Home minister, and dictates terms to everyone, from the CM to the Governor. He vows to change things, and how he manages to do all that is the story.
Story, Screenplay and Direction The story has been explored before many times, but the twist here is that Surya fights against his own family of corrupt politicians. The first half moves along predictably after that, with the usual number of fights and songs, and anti-corruption speeches. In the second half, the audience wakes up again while Surya creates one disturbance after another in the system. The climax and the scenes leading to it seem to have been shot really fast, as they lack clarity.
The good news is the plot does not deviate. Not too many sub-plots occur, and everything leads to the main story. The bad news is that it is neither fully commercialized, with a full-fledged romance track, colorful songs and comic relief scenes (like Tagore or Oke Okkadu). At the same time it does not have the straight forwardness of say, a Samanyudu. It oscillates somewhere in between, with unnecessary heroism and dialogues and action sequences that are a drag.
The national flag incidents of Raghu Babu, the second half when Surya gets to be the Home Minister are the interesting parts in the movie. The editing and the songs are a major let down. The action sequences are nothing we haven't seen before, and some of them quite unnecessary. The last meeting he has with his father and his wife standing by him through thick and thin is also touching.
Performances Rajasekhar shoulders the movie by himself, with a lot of help from veterans like Raghuvaran, who gives a convincing act. Apart from that, Kota, Krishna Bhagwan and others do justice to their roles. The female lead is average. The main villain, Kalabhavan Mani hams a lot, and his Gemini hangover (of imitating animals) is not done yet.
Song and Dance None of the songs are worth listening to or watching. Mumait Khan's item number doesn't impress either. Rajasekhar manages to excuse himself from dancing in two of the songs and does some aerobics in the rest. Well, dancing cannot be everyone's forte. But totally, the songs are disappointing.
Last Word This movie is definitely above average considering Rajasekhar's movies have been flopping one after another. After Sivayya, he needs another hit, and while this may not exactly qualify, it will not sink either.
