Ali Larter and Salman KhanWhen Gurinder Chadha announced that she was going to make a movie which will be a Bollywood take-off, people wondered why. There are so many filmmakers who can make a typical Hindi potboiler, but so few who can make a Bend It Like Beckham. When Bride And Prejudice released, Indians wondered why she decided to project an image of the Indian girl, who does nothing but pine for marriage and a good groom. Marigold is similar, but not the same. An American making a Hindi movie, based on his idea of how Hindi movies are and Indians are-not a good idea. At least Chadha's movie was tolerable at some levels, albeit few. This movie is tiring from frame one.

Plot Marigold is a B-grade Hollywood actor who comes to India after she lands a role in Kamasutra 3. The movie is cancelled, and she runs into a film unit in Goa where she ends up getting a role. Between a confused director, a narcissist main lead and an ex-Miss World female lead jealous of her, she finds love in the form of the choreographer, Prem. She has a boyfriend tucked away in the US while Prem has his own shady flashback. So…the plot unravels.

Story, Screenplay and Direction Nagesh Kukunoor made Bollywood Calling, which is essentially a parody on Indian movies of the 80s. There is an American guy who comes to India to star in a Bollywood movie. It didn't click, but it is watchable. Compare it to this-a female American actor in a commercial Hindi flick. When the movie starts, Marigold is an irritable, arrogant and a manipulative young actor. It could have taken off anywhere, but stays really flat. Nothing happens, at least nothing that makes you wake up enough to see what's happening.

Prem is a choreographer who gives the actor about 20 steps at one go, which doesn't happen. He's supposed to belong to a royal family, but it's neither big news nor does Marigold or her friends know about it till he tells them. The climax is just pathetic, simply pathetic. And the view that we see of India and Indian cinema is so one-sided, like an uneducated foreigner who thinks India is all about Maharajas, elephants and illogical musicals.

The script, direction and climax are all terrible. No highlights to speak of.

Salman KhanPerformances Ali Larter, who gives a good performance in Heroes, looks out of place; ditto her histrionics. Salman Khan, the handsome hunk of this gen, looks tired and bored. Suchitra Pillai in a brief role as an assistant producer is okay, so is Ian Bohen as Marigold's boyfriend.

Song and Dance Average fare from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The dance is not impressive either, considering it's supposed to be a 'musical'.

Last Word This is like an Indian guy born and brought up here directing a movie like American Beauty. It just doesn't work. And it's not a Hollywood movie on any account, nor does it belong to India. Basically, it is a bad film.
