Rajasekhar - Good luck, Touch wood. Turning down all the guess work about the quality of the film and its sustaining power at box office, 'Nayakudu' appears to have ultimately made it well to be regarded as one of the good films that Kodi Ramakrishna and Rajasekhar team can be proud of. But it is said the film is a remake of Malayalam film – 'Runway'. In turn the original must have been influenced by Hollywood fiction. The opening scenes project the hero Raju (Rajasekhar) as a man with scientific bent of mind and temper. He creates a toy plane replica of a US Bomber, which has the capacity of exploding a place where it lands flying with remote control. But there ends that part of science. Rest shows the art of smuggling. You find all funny ways in smuggling art of denatured sprit from state to state. The story is set perhaps in the border area of Chennai. Ananthapur and other cities figure in the theme. And the prime smuggler is named as Wadayar (Ramireddi), sounding Tamil. He has in his gang a driver (Nazer) who transports the spirit, with the knowledge of police as the boss Wadayar bribes the entire police department. The very SP is in the pay roll.
Raju (Rajasekhar) starts out to go to Dubai to make money. He gets into the truck driven by Nazer. It so happens that in the confusion that sets in somebody dies and Raju is jailed for it. Now that his mother (KR Vijaya) and others think that he has gone to Dubai, he never reveals about his arrest and his stay in jail, but quietly sends some money to them through Nazer. Nazer is faithful to Raju because, after the incident, Raju makes Nazer to earn money himself by doing the same business. Then he comes out of jail on parole and behaves as if he has come on holiday from Dubai. The house owner's daughter (Namitha) falls in love with Raju. In the smuggling business Raju assumes the name of check post Sambasiva, because he is expert at the art of taking the load, cheating the check post officials and police. Later he is released from the jail. However on another case he is sent to jail. Namitha then learns that Sambasiva is Raju himself. Then he reveals to her his innocence and she believes and stays his lover.
Meanwhile his younger brother Venu (Riyaz Khan) becomes a Sub-inspector of police. Till he investigates into the smuggling cases and related murders supposed to have been done by Sambasiva, Venu doesn't know that this Sambasiva is his brother Raju himself. Now Venu too starts chasing his brother. But he cannot touch the real villains because his boss, Superintendent of police, is on their side. And the same SP killed Nazer's son. This sets the climax for the drama. Venu realizes his brother's innocence finally, when the villains want to destroy the entire family. Raju schemes a method of pulling them all into a building and using the aeroplane he built to blast the building. He succeeds.
The story has a wonderful screenplay. But the drama is quite engaging from start to end. It looks strange as it has all the Hollywood style settings. The drama is well drawn from his artistes by Kodi Ramakrishna. That way Sagar too must have put in his brains too in mending the subject to Telugu sensitivity. KR Vijaya plays her role with dignity. Riaz Khan's role of SI is limited to a couple of smuggling checks. Yet he leaves his mark. Namitha is paired with Rajasekhar in a couple of songs that appear to have been shot in New Zealand. Raghubabu, Giribabu's son has shaped well as a comedian. He suits well in all roles. And his role and dialogue written for his character, as a friend of Raju, provide relief. Koti's music score matches the mood of action drama.
