Release Date: 3rd August, 2007. Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi's supposed to be a hit in Tamil, but the dubbed Telugu version is lackluster. It does not live up to the expectations, although it does have some redeeming qualities. Vadivelu's comedy, a pacy screenplay and a novel period setting are the high points. Lot of our black and white Janapadam movies have similar concepts with better comedy and direction.  Plot After the death of 22 infants, the Queen gives birth to twins. The astrologer proclaims the elder one to be foolish and the younger one to be wise. The Rajaguru Chandaprachandudu asks the doctor to throw the younger one into a river and inform the King only about the elder son's birth.Thus Pulikesi grows up as a foolish and worthless prince as the evil Rajaguru's plans. The younger son is brought up by the doctor, and Bhargava grows in to a worthy and wise rebel, all set to throw the British out of the country. Pulikesi patronizes the British while Bhargava heads a rebel group. He discovers his true identity and uses it to set the affairs of the Kingdom right. Story, Screenplay and Direction While the comedy and the period set-up are the highlights of the movie, it is to be seen as a spoof on the modern government. Free education, anti-carbonated drinks, celebrities endorsing foreign products including those drinks and other issues such as these are addressed. The 18th century is not authentically portrayed, either deliberately or due to other constraints. Flaws such as a girl with a uniform and a lady with a handbag are seen. The dubbed version is not bad, but many Tamil banners and hoardings remain like in the original. In one sporting event, Pulikesi sits with one British couple-the girl in a top and trouser, the guy shirtless. The good episodes: The final sword fight between Vadivelu and Nasser is very good. The comedy that Pulikesi provides here makes it that much more interesting. Brahmanandam's dubbing for Vadivelu is very good. The tiresome episodes: The whole bear sequence is overdone and illogical. The Ten Commandments in the end is boring. Lack of continuity and the miscommunication of Tamil humor into Telugu are evident.  Performances Vadivelu is very good, mostly in the comic role. The brave 'Bhargava' does not exactly fit him well. Shankar compares him to Chaplin, but it's debatable. Nasser as Chandaprachandudu is convincing. Manorama and Sriman as the Mantri are cast well. The girls (Monica, Tejasree) have less to do and garish make-up and costumes.Song and Dance Nothing to look forward to. Last Word A period comedy-Interesting concept, amateurish direction and humor that oscillates between funny and silly. |
