Jagapathi Babu'The pen is mightier than the sword' is a point that Jagapati Babu's latest social-political drama stresses over. After a fun-filled and teen flick 'College', director Ravi C. Kumar (Ravi Chavali) is back with a bang. No huge stars here, no huge budgets-just a clear story-line and above-average direction. After two huge movies with much hype and hoopla failed to fiddle with the audience's imagination, this humble venture with its matter-of-fact narration comes as a breath of fresh air. It might not be everybody's cup of tea, nor can it become a block-buster having no major stars and no great music to boast about, but it will be an interesting watch for anybody who comes without any expectations and wants to watch a story-not a spectacle.

Plot 'Addam' (The mirror) is a pro-public newspaper which is bent on exposing scams and crimes committed by those in power. It is run by Chandrashekar (Ranganath) who also runs an orphanage in which Chandra (Jagapati), Aparna (Archana), Adi (Dasari Arun) grew up and for them Chandrashekar is their father. When the corrupt home-minister, Bhagwan Raju (Sai Kumar) murders Chandrashekar to stop him from exposing his true colors, Chandra, Adi and Archana along with Naxalite-turned-journalist Das (Rajeev Kanakala) plan to take on the system and teach the corrupt politicians a lesson. In doing so, they make Raju fulfill his promises and do good to the society. Insiders, outsiders, scoops and spies all form a part of the interesting narrative.

Story, screenplay and direction There is a story, and that's a relief. Mega-budgets and huge star-casts forget to include a story in their checklist. The screenplay is good, and the narration never drags. The direction falters in the first half, as if the direction is not sure if this is what he wanted, but as the pace and tempo of the script pick up, so does the direction.

The comedy by MS Narayana and his soap opera obsessed wife (Subhashini), Das and his love story, Vandana (Kamna) and Chandra's love track generate a few laughs.

The scene where Chandra makes Kamna's brother Goud guard him is a highlight. The scene where Raju's well-wishers all turn up to pray for his ill daughter is moving. The scene where all the politicos fight and Jagapati comes in and says, 'Assembly anukuntunnara?' is good. Patnaik's track is a little corny, and Das had absolutely no reason to shoot the hired goons stealing proof against Raju-people have become immune to killing.

Kamna JethmalaniPerformances Jagapati Babu has good screen presence and though he looks a little tired, he still manages to get away with it-tanned, bloodshot eyes and confidence come through. Dasari Arun is still a little wooden, but improving. Rajeev Kanakala is a good actor and can go places-but needs to go on the Atkins diet really soon. Archana is one of the few Telugu heroines we have, and she should be encouraged-she is as good or as bad as any Mumbai import. She still needs to work on her body language as she seems a little awkward sometimes. Kamna suits the role of a bindass babe really well, and the few scenes she appears in, she does well enough. MS is funny, Satya Krishnan as his daughter is a natural actor. Sai Kumar has a significant and good role after Antahpuram, and has done justice to it.

Song and dance Below average copies.

And the verdict is.. At a time when national dailies are selling news space, a movie like this makes sense. The first half is okay, but as the story picks up pace, the second half is an interesting watch. Go in without expectations, and one is bound to get entertained.
