Shiva, A Path-Breaking Film

Nagarjuna is known for introducing new talent and Ramgopal Varma, who went on to become the country's Numero Uno director, is just one of the many talents spotted by the actor.

Their first film together Shiva (released on October 5th, 1989), jointly produced by Akkineni Venkat and Yarlagadda Surendra under the banner of Annapurna Studios-SS Creations, was not only a path-breaking film from the technical aspects point of view but also broke many records at the box-office.

The film was screened houseful for 121 days at Jagadamba 70mm, Vizag, a theatre which never witnessed a 100-day film till then.

Also, it ran for 155 days at Devi 70mm, Hyderabad, the highest at that time in the theatre. Later, two of Nagarjuna's films-Ninne Pelladatha and Annamayya completed a silver jubilee in it.

It narrowly missed a silver-jubilee run at both PGR Movieland (Tirupati) and Shanthi A/C (Anantapuram) (had a 169-day run at both the theatres).

All in all, the film had a 100-day run in 22 theatres across Andhra Pradesh. The details are as follows:

Shiva also won Ramgopal Varma the Nandi award for the best director.

Inspired by the success of the Telugu version, Nagarjuna remade the film in Hindi but it was not as big a success as he'd hoped. The Hindi version (released on December 7th, 1990) had a solo 100-day run at Lakshmi Narayana (Pune).

But Udayam, the Tamil dubbed version of Shiva, had a silver jubilee run in 7 centres
