Interview With Tanusree Dutta
Ex-Miss India Tanusree Dutta is playing the female lead in Nandamuri Balakrishna's next film 'Veera Bhadra,' directed by AS Ravikumar Chowdary and produced by Ambika Krishna. CineGoer.com caught up with the beauty queen for a brief chat. Here are a few excerpts:
Tell us about your entry into Tollywood.
Well, by the grace of God, with my first two Bollywood films 'Aashiq Banaye Aapne' and 'Chocolate' having been received well, I had been getting good offers from the Telugu film industry and the South Indian movie world in general. Ever since I was crowned Miss India, offers had been coming my way, but I was not in a hurry. I wanted to wait for the right projects, that is, good movies.
So when Ambika Cinema Productions approached me with the offer of the lead role in their film opposite superstar Balakrishna I went through the script, which I found suitable. Of course to be cast opposite Balakrishna garu, a big actor over here was a great opportunity I could not turn down. I accepted the offer and that's how I entered the Telugu film industry.
Tell us about your role in the movie.
My role in the film is that of a very young, dynamic, college-going girl. She is very smart, hip and trendy, and a bit arrogant. At the same time she is good-natured too and very stylish. If I add anything more, I will be revealing a lot about the story, which I don't want to do. This film shot mostly at beautiful locations, has got action, love, romance, comedy, drama, beautiful songs and good music.
How was it working with Balakrishna?
I think working with Balakrishna sir has been a very good experience for me. Thanks to his seniority and experience he has been like a teacher and a guide to me throughout the film. He often used to tell me how to do a particular scene and even help me with the dancing in the shooting of our songs. Very energetic on the sets, he motivates people.
We had an excellent team of technicians too, including our director AS Ravikumar Chowdary who had put in a lot of effort in preparing the script, and cameraman Mr. Ram Prasad, an ace technician who through his camera work, made me look wonderful on the screen. The teamwork and the good job that even the assistants have turned out has caused a lot of expectations about the film.
How was it shooting in foreign locales?
We have shot a lot of songs abroad. Most of the songs have been shot on foreign locations. Only two songs have been shot in India because they required a traditional background. The scenes shot in New Zealand and Malaysia and the other beautiful locations, with their beaches, mountains, scenic beauty with all its vibrant colors, and then the melodious music have all enhanced the grandeur of the movie and the songs in it.
Tell us something about your co-star Sada.
I didn't get much opportunity to work with her. I just shot with her for a couple of days. But she is a very sweet girl and is a brilliant actress as well. So it was my fortune that I got to work with another actress from the Telugu cinema in my first film. And we got along really well. We got along like friends on the set.
Tell us about your other co-stars.
Well, I think this first film of mine has a huge cast. There are so many artistes, most of them, accomplished popular artistes in the Telugu cinema. This film is loaded with performances. Every artiste in the film has contributed a lot to the film. The comic scenes have turned out to be very funny because the artistes are highly professional and very, very talented. And I think it was a brilliant experience working with all of them. Besides, there is action, drama, dance, romance, etc.
Which is your favorite song in the film?
My favorite song in the film is the slow romantic song number 'Abbabba Pedavi Poojaku' we shot in New Zealand with me and Balakrishna. The other songs too, with their beautiful text and lyricism are nice. The music is very good. My costumes and Balakrishna sir's costumes are very nice. He looks quite smart in the clothes he wore for the dance.
Tell us about the producer Ambika Krishna.
Our producers Mr. Ambika Krishna and Mr. Ambika Prasad have been very cooperative though out the shooting. They really took great care to make all the artistes feel at home and comfortable. Considering the fact that I am an outsider with a bit of language problem, they were very co-operative; they made sure that I was comfortable and happy. I think I have been treated with lot of respect. Everything concerning me has been taken care of.
On the whole, a lot of effort by everyone has gone into the making of the film. That is why the film looks grand, big, and beautiful. Their hard work has really paid off.
Tell us about the director AS Ravikumar Chowdary.
Mr. Ravikumar is an ace director. He is a very, very sound technician. He also has helped me bring out the character of my role in the film. He guided me at every stage, saying, for example, 'this is how you should perform.' He knows how to make his actresses look beautiful. He kept advising me on style, saying, 'you should walk like this; this kind of movement will make you look pretty, etc.'. So, I have learnt a lot by working with him. And I am sure that this film is going to be a success. Naturally, I have a lot of expectations from the film.
Do you have any memories you would like to share?
I think it was in New Zealand. We had been there for 10-15 days for shooting and we were running short of time. We had to finish shooting the songs quickly and pack up. One day we went with our make up on, to the location, all ready to shoot. When everything was ready, it started raining. As it wouldn't stop, there was no shooting, and we went shopping, each their way, across the whole of New Zealand. That day we lost a whole day's work.
While it was a loss of production time, our going out shopping led to a lot of confusion, no one knowing where the others were. Everyone was looking for everyone else. Finally, tired, we thought, 'ok fine, let's go and eat'. So I went to the McDonalds to eat and there I saw some of the people of the unit. Some more people from the unit too joined us. We all got back together again at the same place.
What kind of roles are you eyeing?
I haven't thought of them. But I would like to do different kind of roles - whatever good comes my way - comedy, romance, action, thriller, and drama – any role with a difference.
How was it working in Tollywood?
I think they are very nice and very traditional people. Their way of working is very good. Generally the management and the organization are very efficient here. Because everything is so well organized, it makes the artistes feel very comfortable. Shooting schedules and way of working and everything is so very well planned and executed. It certainly was a good experience working here. And by God's grace I hope I will continue working here.
Tell us about the film.
'Veerabhadra' is my first Telugu film and my first South Indian film too. It is very close to my heart. I just hope that you will like the film. Please watch the film. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the backdrop of the songs; enjoy the comedy, the drama and the romance. It's an entertaining film and it is worth watching for sure.
And thank you so much for all the support and love that I have received here in Hyderabad and the whole of South India. And hopefully in the years to come I shall come up with good films and keep you entertaining.
You were recently honored by the Government of Jharkhand. Tell us about that experience.
I feel much honored that the Jharkhand government decided to honor me with the postal stamp they issued in my name. It is a matter of prestige to and a distinction conferred on my family. It is a matter of pride for my family. It certainly motivates more and more youngsters from Jharkhand to go out there, pursue unconventional careers, and follow their dreams. And I hope mine will be an example for other youngsters to go ahead in life, be confident, work hard and achieve something.
What are your future projects?
I am taking my time out to sign projects. I have been getting offers for quite some time now. By God's grace my work has been appreciated and good filmmakers are approaching me. I will just take my time, as I have to balance my engagement between Hindi films and South Indian movie. I will do selected projects – good projects. Well, let's see.
What are your favorite pass times?
I like reading, dancing, listening to music, cooking, and gardening.
