Superhero Flick, Middling Music
They've excavated the music files of this ancient new release and Chiyan and Devi Sri are smiling again. Kudos to the archeology dept. Music is fine, but stills looked awesome back when it was supposed to release. Kind of grown on us, hasn't it? The title track and Chiyan's vocals are good, the item number sounds okay but other than that, nothing exciting to offer. Hope the movie makes up for it.
Excuse Me This is the 'Po Ve..Po Ra' song. This sounds more like a Harris Jayaraj than a Devi Sri Prasad. So Vikram's singing in this song and there is some prose in it which Chiyan belts out with his Tamil accent. Suchitra Karthik Kumar has a super husky voice. Its another girl-chases-boy number. It has some country influence in the strings and keyboard and Vikram has a nice singing voice. Nothing sensational, overall, but a decent opener. ***
Mambo Mamiya Vikram sings another song, this time with Rita giving him company. This is a fun song, Hakuna-Matata (Lion King) kind of number about love. All the lyrics are by Sahiti. Hummable, sweet and breezy. And maybe a little cheesy. And by the way, why does Vikram always need lyrics like Nokia, Mambiya or Mambo? Just because Aparichitudu rocked. ***
Ivvanne Dupe Vikram starts the number by a rapid rendition of a menu with all kinds of food in it, and says 'Ivvanne Dupe, Pizza e Top e' and then DSP churns out a list of relationships rapidly in a nasal voice, and then 'Snehithude Top e' and so on and so forth (Jolly in emotions, Mallana in Annas). Not exactly a song, is it?
Mallanna The title track and this is when you feel this is a DSP album. This is Top e, but two years ago (when it first came out), it sounded better. This has a folk-ish feel with DSP singing praises of Mallanna and by the lyrics you gather he is a Robin Hood kind of Hero. The instrumental is good and DSP's vocals suit the number. Does it remind anyone else of the title track of Thiruda Thiruda (Donga Donga in Telugu, AR Rehman)? ***.75
Allegra Hey Ricky Martin, are you listening to this? Not, huh. Rita rocks with her vocals in this mediocre impersonation of a spanish song, but good use of instrumental nonetheless. **.75
Meow Meow Vikram again, this time with Priya Hemesh. The song has some shades similar to DSP's own Mayilu Mayilu (Bunny).
Mallanna (DSP Mix) You know how DSP starts his DSP Mix with 'Yo, this is DSP! Presenting you Mallanna!' and you think 'Yo! Why? Why?' Why spoil something that is already good. This is not intense like the original, but a little more umm modern? Silly? Either one. Like someone remixed a perfectly good song during a power cut, got a few lines to sound decent but generally started it to annoy people. Success anyways. Don't worry, this will be used during the end titles and most theatres don't even show that part. Ha! **1/2
Naa Peru Meenakumari This starts with a (bad) remix of the 'Paccha gaddi koseti' song and then the real song starts with Malathy putting on her best item number-ish voice. There is some annoying rap too. Enjoy. ***
Last Word Overall, this is a decent album. It doesn't sound like Devi Sri, but still, composers can change their style a little bit, or tweak it to sound like..somebody else. Well, at least he has some signature tunes in there, somewhere including the title song and the Item song. Vikram's vocals are fine and nobody minds the accent. Nothing spectacular. Just decent stuff. Hopefully the movie will rock and the songs will magically sound better to our shallow ears. Right now, Above Average.
